Lehigh University Joins Pennsylvania Team to Turn an Aging Gas Well into a Geothermal Power Source

Researchers from Lehigh University are joining forces with state agencies and industry leaders to explore whether Pennsylvania’s legacy energy infrastructure can deliver clean geothermal power directly to local communities. Supported by $1.6 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Lehigh scientists and engineers will participate in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania EGS Pilot Demonstration. Led by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the $14 million initiative aims to tap underground heat to generate electricity and district heating in rural Indiana County.
